Mahir Birav is a full time director and a part time screenwriter, both of which would be his biggest passion since boyhood. After getting his Cinema and TV degree from the University of Istanbul, he worked professionaly as a camera assistant, editor and sound designer in numerous TV shows, programmes, documentaries and feature films, including Dr. Dolittle (1998) and Starwars Episode 4: The Phantom Menace (1999) for their dubbed theatrical releases.
But his passion was to be on the more creative side, and he moved to the US to get his master’s degree on Motion Picture from Academy of Art University, San Francisco. After working on several music videos, commercials and two feature films, he returned home and began working as a first assistant to some of the best local and international commercial directors.
He has been directing commercials for clients like Lays, Vodafone, THY, PTT, HSBC since 2008. Having walked almost all paths of production and post production has made him flexible and adaptable to projects of all sizes and budgets. What distinguishes him most is his grasp on the overall aspects of filmmaking, and on commercial films in particular, which results in a very solution based approach against possible obstacles of budget or schedule. His ad spot for Mor Cati Shelter for Women was shot with almost zero budget, and still won a Kristal Elma award, the most prestigious ad award in Turkey.
